Academy SRT at Southern Rep Offering Suzuki Acting Classes with Instructor Antony Sandoval
Academy SRT, Southern Rep Theatre’s adult education program, along with internationally renowned Suzuki masters Antony Sandoval and Natsumi Sugiyama will be offering Suzuki Training every month beginning now at Southern Rep’s rehearsal space located at 4701 Freret Street at Valence. The classes are ongoing so you may join up at any time. Three classes are offered per week at a set fee of $150 per month. These one-hour classes will meet Fridays and Saturdays at 10:00am and Mondays at 7:00 pm. To sign up for classes please contact Aimée Hayes at 504.891.8332.
Internationally renowned theatre director Tadashi Suzuki developed the Suzuki Acting Method to help actors develop physical expression, focus, flexibility, strength and clear articulation via a series of exercises. Popular with many theatre companies such as Anne Bogart’s SITI Company, the Suzuki Acting Method’s rigorous training and discipline has no equal in immediate and dramatic results for the modern actor.
Antony Sandoval has directed productions for Tadashi Suzuki in Shizuoka and Toga Mura, Japan; at the Franko National Theatre in Kiev, Ukraine for The International Bulgakov Theatre Festival’s adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s Heart of the Dog; and many productions throughout the United States. He is the recipient of a Garland Award and an LA Weekly Award for best director as well as garnering a Best Director nomination for an Ovation Award. Acting credits include many productions under director Tadashi Suzuki in Japan as well as work throughout the USA in various festivals, film and television. Antony also performs and produces with the Future Stars of Hollywood and Associates. He holds an MFA degree from the University of Delaware’s Professional Theatre Training Program, and currently teaches at Tulane University. Check out his website at antonysandoval.org.
Natsumi Sugiyama, originally from Japan, has been a member of Ku na’uka Theatre Company in Tokyo, Japan under the direction of Satoshi Miyagi where she performed many leads such as Narukami in the play of the same name, Helen of Troy, Electra and others. She also worked with Tadashi Suzuki in Kachikachiyama, Ivanov, Cinderella, etc. Natsumi has performed internationally at the Theatre Olympics in Delphi, Greece; the Beseto Festival in Neiha, China; the Nikan Festival in Seoul, Korea; and the International Theatre Festival of New Delhi India.
