INSIDE THE CREOLE MAFIA, Mark Broyard and Roger Guenveur Smith’s award-winning “not-too-dark comedy,” returns to its roots with an exclusive limited engagement at Southern Rep. For nearly three decades, Broyard and Smith have performed the musically inspired duet, described by the New York Times’ Margo Jefferson as “hilarious.” INSIDE THE CREOLE MAFIA is an ever-fluid, largely improvised meditation on Creole culture—both the homegrown and in-exile varieties—and is served up with big helpings of red beans and race. The Mafia take on supremacists of all stripes, armed with fine-toothed combs, brown paper bags, and hot sauce-infused holy water.
Mark Broyard is a composer, vocalist, and assemblage artist whose acclaimed work is seminal in the historically essential Los Angeles Creole community. Among Roger Guenveur Smith’s solos are A HUEY P. NEWTON STORY, RODNEY KING, and FREDERICK DOUGLASS NOW. His many screen credits include EVE’S BAYOU, QUEEN SUGAR, and the upcoming #FREERAYSHAWN.
