UP ON THE SILVER SCREEN

(THEATRE WORKSHOP, AGES 4–7, PRE-K–2ND GRADE)

Created by Helen Jaksch and the Ensemble

In this creative and exploratory workshop, performers will become Stars and Starlets of the Silver Screen. Together with our Teaching Artists, performers will play games and learn about pantomime, melodrama, and physical comedy. We will be inspired by old movie stars like The Marx Brothers, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Shirley Temple. We will explore how to use our bodies, voices, and imaginations to create theatre. We’ll focus on collaboration, creativity, and fun to encourage creative expression and promote self-esteem and confidence. The workshop will culminate in a performance where our Stars and Starlets will sing, dance, and share all of the things we will have learned and worked on throughout the fall.

BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH INTERNET CATS

(THEATRE WORKSHOP, AGES 8-12, 3RD-6TH GRADE)

Written by Patrick Greene

In this funny play, Celebrity Interviewer Ian McWorthy has a dream line-up for tonight’s episode of the World Wide Window: a veritable litterful of felines whose internet antics have catapulted them to fame. In this fast-paced series of hilarious interviews, Ian uncovers the story behind Tuffy’s first dramatic foray into a cardboard box, learns just what makes Nelson the Grouchy Cat so very, very grouchy, contends with the diva-like antics of Kitty Boo Boo and her entourage, and so much more. So stay tuned! Things are bound to get a little…hairy.

ABOUT OUR WORKSHOPS

We believe that every young person is an artist. Our Fall Theatre Workshops aim to encourage and cultivate the artistry, imagination, and creativity of New Orleans’ young artists. We will be offering workshops for youth aged 4-7 and 8-12.

Whether you’ve enrolled your child in one of our workshops before or are considering it for the first time, we want you to know that we have heard feedback from families and will be doing things a little differently this year. Under the leadership of our new Director of Arts Education Helen Jaksch, the workshops have been tailored to be creative, exploratory, and process-based. Both workshops will culminate in a performance for families, friends, and loved ones, but we want to make sure that we focus on the progress and experience of each child. As always, we accept all performers without an audition and each child will perform at the end of the workshop. These workshops are about discovering how to use our bodies, voices, and imaginations to create theatre and how to work together. And of course, these workshops are all about fun!

If your child is on the cusp of the age ranges, feel free to email Helen at education@southernrep.com and we will make sure to place your child in the workshop that is right for them. Each workshop has a cap to ensure the highest quality experience for all participants, so please register early to ensure your child’s spot!

We believe that every child in New Orleans has the right to create and have access to art, and so we provide up to three need-based scholarships for each workshop. Email Helen ateducation@southernrep.com for more information.
