The Southern Miss Steel Pan Orchestra was founded in the Spring of 1994 by Dr. John Wooton. This initial group consisted of four pan instruments, drum set and Latin percussion. Since then the Band has grown to forty members in all. SoMiSPO has several different voices in the steel band instrumentation family, including lead pans, double tenors, double seconds, guitar pans, cello pans, tenor bass pans, bass pans, drum set, and various percussion instruments know as the “Engine Room.” SoMiSPO is the large ensemble but the group does break down into smaller groups for various functions. These groups have performed for various venues such as festivals, parties, formal concerts and casinos. Their repertoire consists of traditional calypso and soca tunes, as well as popular tunes, classical, Cuban and jazz music. In 2005 SoMiSPO recorded a cd with renown steel pan artist Andy Narell. The cd includes several of Andy’s compositions, the Southern Miss Fight Song on steel pans and a two movement piece commissioned by SoMiSPO and composed by Brazilian composer Ney Rosauro entitled “Two Brazilian Steel Dances.”
