Southern Rep Theatre's Impact
A mainstay of New Orleans’ arts industry for more than 28 years, Southern Rep Theatre is working to promote a stronger, more vibrant, creative community, to encourage a higher quality of life for city residents, and to enhance the city’s longstanding legacy as a hub for culturally important, innovative theatre and art.
A mainstay of New Orleans’ arts community for more than 34 years, Southern Rep Theatre is working to promote a stronger, more vibrant, equitable, and inclusive creative community, to encourage a higher quality of life for city residents, and to enhance the city’s longstanding legacy as a hub for culturally important, innovative theatre and art.
Southern Rep Theatre produces critically acclaimed, and artistically meaningful productions with pre-show and post-show talkbacks, interactive lobby installations, and other special events, Southern Rep doesn’t just present artistic work, we give audiences a chance to explore what makes it meaningful. Educational, engaging, and accessibly- priced, our productions encourage audience members of every background to develop their interest in New Orleans’ theatre and art.
Southern Rep serves as a resource for emerging playwrights, performers, and other theatre professionals in the Gulf South with a commitment to new play development and developing professional artists. We offer opportunities for them to explore their craft, and publically showcase their work – all important and rare opportunities that “untested” playwrights, directors, and performers require to advance their careers.
Southern Rep knows that New Orleans’ legacy is only as strong as our arts community is, and we are committed to protecting and encouraging the livelihoods of our city’s creatives. Southern Rep’s Mainstage Season, Lagniappe Series, and Arts Education Programs create, on average, more than 500 fair-wage employment opportunities a year for our city’s creative community.
We also encourage inclusivity and collaboration by partnering with business groups, environmental advocates, social clubs, academic departments, government organizations, museums and cultural institutions, non-profits, media conglomerates, and community coalitions to better engage populations who may be unaccustomed to supporting the arts. Continually seeking out and encouraging partnerships creates a stronger community of current and potential arts supporters.
As a fundamentally New Orleans’ theatre company with a national reputation for excellence, Southern Rep Theatre habitually and powerfully represents the Gulf South on the national stage, showcasing our region’s skill, storytelling, and professionalism, and building greater support for New Orleans’ culture and heritage.
Southern Rep is actively cultivating the next generation with our unique “School to Stage Pipeline” of Arts Education Programs. Offering a slate of resources (often at free and discounted rates) for children, youth, teens, and young adults, Southern Rep’s “School to Stage Pipeline” provides thousands of New Orleans’ students an opportunity to experience and participate in live, professional theatre every year. Together, the After-School and Summer Camp Workshops, YONOLA, Free and Discount Student Matinee Programs, and Student Rush Ticket Discounts demonstrably improve literacy, critical thinking skills, artistic knowledge, and willingness to collaborate among student participants. The programs encourage students of every age, ability and socioeconomic status to actively engage with theatre, to develop their interest, and to understand why protecting New Orleans’ cultural legacy should be important to them, and the generations beyond.
